Lady Gaga put on a show-stopping performance of her hit song “Million Reasons” in front of Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall at the Royal Variety Performance in London. She joins a renowned list of acts that have performed at the charity event, including Laurel and Hardy in 1947, The Beatles in 1963, the Supremes in 1968 and the Blue Man Group in 2005.
Gaga is no stranger to the event. Her first appearance at the Royal Variety Performance was on December 7, 2009 where she performed her song “Speechless”. During her most recent performance, the singer donned a stunning white ball gown, opting for a more subdued look that allowed her vocals to take center stage. This was quite the departure from the red latex dress, red sparkled eye make-up, and ten-foot-tall piano from her previous show.
The pop superstar’s rendition was a departure from the studio version, featuring a lush orchestral arrangement that elevated the emotional ballad. Gaga’s Royal Variety Performance was praised by fans for showcasing her powerful vocals and dynamic stage presence.
The song’s origin story adds to the poignancy of the performance. Gaga co-wrote “Million Reasons” with Hillary Lindsey, a Nashville-based songwriter, and Mark Ronson, the acclaimed producer.
“I wrote this song with a Nashville native, Hillary Lindsey,” Gaga told the crowd. “We sat on a couch together, guitar and piano, going back and forth, and we were going, ‘Why these men – my dad, my boyfriend, all the men in my life – they gave me a million reasons [to leave], but I just need one good one to stick around.'”
Obviously overlooked, the song originally dropped out of the Hot 100 after peaking at #52. However, Gaga sang this during her halftime performance at the 2017 Super Bowl between the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons, which sent it back to the chart, all the way to #4.
With its raw, emotional lyrics and Gaga’s impassioned delivery, “Million Reasons” struck a chord with the audience at the Royal Variety Performance. The clip of her performance has since amassed over 49 million views on YouTube, underscoring the song’s widespread popularity.
Lady Gaga’s ability to rearrange and reinterpret her music for live shows is a testament to her artistry. Her Royal Variety Performance of “Million Reasons” showcased a new dimension to the track, solidifying Gaga’s status as one of the most versatile and captivating performers in the music industry today.
